This spotty black comedy from Lawrence Kasdan (The Big Chill)–based on a tru story–stars Kevin Kline as a womanizing pizzeria owner whose mousy wife (Tracey Ullman) tries multiple ways of murdering him with the aid of sundry friends and hired hands. The film never picks up the necessary momentum or develops the necessary tone to drive it, and one is left picking and choosing which of the performers is at least adequately entertaining. Kline is good but perhaps a bit too theatrical, and Joan Plowright is hilarious as his mother-in-law. The funniest joke in the whole thing belongs to William Hurt and Keanu Reeves as deeply-stoned, would-be-killers who emerge from a taxi and look as if they can’t remember what planet they’re on. –Tom Keogh

Jim Henson vaulted Kermit, the famous floppy-armed frog, and his Muppet pals to the big screen with this charming 1979 musical adventure. Like the TV show that inspired it, Henson and director James Frawley playfully acknowledge movie cliches and conventions and allow the characters to address the camera in asides, like a Hope and Crosby road film for the 1980s. The ambitious singing frog decides to leave his swamp and conqur Hollywood, gathering a group of friends along the way (Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, and more) and bumping into oodles of gust stars making tongu-in-cheek cameos (my favorite is the tip-of-the-hat appearance by Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy). Meanwhile, despicable fast-food king Charles Durning pursus Kermit, hoping to make him the spokesfrog for his Frogs-Legs restaurant franchise. Austin Pendleton costars as Durning’s sad sack henchman while gust stars include James Coburn, Dom DeLuise, Madeleine Kahn, Steve Martin, Milton Berle, Bob Hope, Carol Kane, Cloris Leachman, Mel Brooks, Richard Pryor, Telly Savalas, Elliot Gould, Orson Welles, and Big Bird. As the mad scientist in Mesa of Lost Women, Coogan has assembled a race of scantily clad superwomen, “spider women” with long fingernails, led by an enormous tarantula. Deep in the Mexican interior, a researcher (Robert Knapp) tries to get to the bottom of things, but winds up under the spider women’s spell, and puts in a weird, lobotomized goody-two-shoes performance for the rest of the film. Anyone who’s a fan of Ed Wood’s celluloid atrocities The Giant Leeches, The Giant Gila Monster, or countless other examples of ’50s sci-fi junk should love the almost incomprehensible Mesa of Lost Women. In fact, Ed Wood fans should recognize this movie’s incredibly irritating classical guitar and piano score from Wood’s stinker Jailbait. From the first clumsy dance number in a Mexican bar to the movie’s high-tension finale, this is jaw-dropping stuff. –Jerry Renshaw

Preston is particularly good as the randy old con artist; he and Lupino strike real sparks. Peckinpah’s slow-motion camera is put to particularly good use filming the balletic violence of the rodeo, at once more terrifying and awe-inspiring than any gun battle.
